The theft problem is a good reason to rent a crappy looking bike especially if you are just using it to cruise around Ubud instead of walking, as opposed to making long trips around the island. NEVER give up your passport to the rental people--then you are stuck if you need to negotiate over any problems later.

I haven't read what you are referring to, but I can tell you that theft of motorbikes is very high in Bali, so don't assume corruption or some kind of setup.

Many tourists do not take much care of the motorbike, leaving it parked where-ever they care to stop with no security. A local would look for a parking attendant, or if non around, ask a local sitting nearby to keep an eye on the bike (and give them a small amount of money). Your average Balinese will make sure their motorbike is locked up at night, often that means bringing it inside the house. Right into the living area. They know how many motorbikes get stolen.

What Shorty says is true, however it does not necessarily extend only to unlicensed drivers/riders.
Even with the valid permits, if you are involved in an accident - at fault or not - you may be responsible for the repairs and medical bills for all involved.
This stems from two streams of thought:
1. you are a guest in the country and the accident wouldn't have happened if you weren't there, so it's your fault
2. Who pays for an accident in Indonesia is often about who has the capacity to pay rather than who is at fault. Amongst locals, when there is an accident, the person with the most money pays the most (in most cases ;-0). So, you are a bule = rich (whether true or not) = able to pay the most. Operating a vehicle in Indonesia is at your own risk. As long as you understand that the rules are not the same as at home.

bele covered it well...no licence, no insurance cover.

but there are further unseen nasties.....

if you have an accident, which, under normal circumstances would not be your fault, you are to blame. you are an unlicenced rider.

take an extreme example. you don't have an international permit valid for a motorbike (or car for that matter). a local (or legal rider/driver) comes thru a red light and wipes you out. you're at fault - unlicenced - and responsible for all damage to all vehicles involved and for all injury/loss of earnings..current and future/medical bills etc, etc.

tough? no. try riding/driving or unlicenced at home.

The more professional or 'official' rental businesses will want one. Plenty of locals just rent you their own bike and they don't care.

Your issue is with your travel insurance. If you don't have an International Permit and are not licensed to ride a bike in your own country, you will probably not be covered. That means, if you have an accident and need medical attention, you will not be covered.

Also, if you are stopped by the police they will have a perfect excuse to fine you, as by law you are required to have a valid license. An International Permit is considered a valid license, your home country license without the translation is not.

BTW, it is not an International License. It is an International Driving Permit and is merely a translation of your home country driver's license. You must carry both for the IDP to be valid.

It will depend on the condition of the bike you are hiring (how new it is), the size, how long you are hiring for, how good your negotiation skills are, and what time of the year it is.

e.g. if you try to hire during a busy local holiday season (such as Ramadan) demand is high and so is the price. Last year we couldn't get below about 40,000 per day during Ramadan around the Kuta area, and actually found it hard to get a 125cc bike and not a scooter. (by hard I mean we actually had to go to more than one place to ask, instead of being pounced on by 10 guys trying to hire us a bike)

But in general, a 125cc step-through with gears will be around 30,000 to 40,000 per day, maybe a bit more for a brand new bike in a busy period.

Every year I go to Bali 1 or 2 times and I always hire a motor bike for the 2 weeks I stay there.

The guy I hire one from always asks.. "How much did you pay last time" and I Never can remember - How dumb is that!

So, what is the hire rate for a 100cc or so motorbike either manual or automatic, for a 2 week hire.

Maybe I will write it down some place sensible this time

Alex, there are numerous places you will find jeeps for rent. Thee is a section on Baliblog that you will find useful and it has contacts etc. It is far cheaper than hiring a driver.Just make sure you take out insurance and check the vehicle for dents etc and tell the person you are renting from. Or you could take a foto of it!.

Alex, a big issue for an itinerary like that is time. If you've got a month or so, that looks fine. Two weeks, and you'd be on the road for a lot of it. Bali looks small, but the roads are small, windy, and if you get stuck behind a truck, the driving is slower than molasses. If you are at two weeks or so, I'd suggest sticking to east Bali, which can include Seminyak as a starting point, and Singaraja and, on a map, everything to the right of those places. If it's your first time in Bali, and time is at a premium, consider hiring a van and driver. The roads can also be confusing! You don't have to have the driver around every minute. Get to a destination, and tell him to come back in a couple of days. Or, if you don't like him, get someone else at that point.

Hi - we are arriving in Bali in early December and plan to make our way around alot of the Island. The suggested route at this stage is :
Seminyak - Tanah Lot - Antosari - Pupuan - Mayong - Munduk - Singaraja - Tejakula - Amed - Tirtagangga - Ubud - Sanur
Does anyone have any suggestions of cheap places to stay for a family of 5 and places to go and things to do and see along the way. The children are all under 13 and very active and adventurous! We have been told not to hire your own car, but once we clear the Denpasar area - would this be a problem?
Hope to hear from you..

Hi Ripeha
Well I have mixed feelings about this place - it really is not my thing, but my daughter loved it (she is an adult!!!)
It is a theme park type format (complete with restaurants and water park) and costs USD25.00 to get in which entitles you to look at the animals and have one photo op with either the Tiger or Orang Utan and access to water park. If you want both photo ops you pay an extra 30k Rup. Now don't get excited you use your own camera!!!
I am not a fan of animals being used to make $'s in this way and the orang utan especially. However it is popular and new, but nothing there that I would want to see again. I just had to check it out for myself after number 1 daughter reported how good it was. They do have a white tiger exhibit which is special as they are the largest cat and the drive through safari area is kinda ok.

The entire experience is very "Hollywood"!!

Hi,
Suggest you consider getting out of Kuta and spending time in Ubud - you can visit the galleries, eat the best food in Bali, walk through rice fields and see the most beautiful scenery and be away from the madness of Kuta. Also you may like to explore the east, using Candi Dasa as a base and visit the Justice Buildings of Klungkung, Safari Park in Gianyar, Tenganan Bali Aga Village, Tirtaganga (water palace), the secret white sand beach and Amed. There is so much to see and do, but thought I would give you some food for thought.

Hello people
I live very close to Bali and so visit very often. I have been traveling there since my children were babies. They are now either in Uni or working..
I have always allowed my company to direct the activities on holiday, especially when the company were children and young adults.
My partner and I have traveled there but again, I allowed him to direct the activities. I adore Bali in any shape or form but have wanted other people to feel the 'love' from theirs.
Now I have been to Bali by myself a few times but mostly shopped and raced around.
I NEED to take holiday in September, I am all in, so much has happened lately and I'm tired and down.
I am traveling by myself and need to see most wonderful things, do less strenuous activities, treat myself gently and with respect, but above all enjoy the time doing exactly what pleases me. I am shopped out and don't want bar of it. Any suggestions?? I have always hired a car or a driver but at 53 do you think I am too old to try a scooter and bimble around on that? See! I've lost my mojo, I have done things for other people for so long I have forgotten how to enjoy things by MYSELF!! How much would the scooter cost and can you give me any tips there. Suggestions dear people. I arrive 21 September for 2 weeks. I will be in Kuta.
Cheers.
