Travel Warnings AGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH - I understand Aussie government has to Protect its Citizens but yet How about Warnings for AMERICA, UK, SPAIN, INDIA, AFRICA, the list goes on. I think Bali has unfairly been stuck in a travel warning list from Australia for years now. Sure there was a deffinate issue years ago but Fark me the indonesian Government seem to be the only once who can catch and deal with their terrorists They have a great Inteligence organisation here and i think have done wonders on improving safety here Cummon Kevin 07 how about Lifting the warning now I think they have proven themselves. I feel Safer here in a shopping mall or a restaurant than i do IN Australia And thats serious.. Any terrorist can walk into a mall or Hotel un detected In Australia.

I was also wondering this myself. I know the alert has been there since the Bali bombings back in 02, but wasnt sure if the alert was at a higher level than then. I'm going with my roommate and girlfriend (both female) on Wednesday for 10 days, and they were stressing a little. I've been telling em to chill out :)

Anyway, staying at the Grand Balisani in Seminyak. Might see you round :)

Many thanks for all these really thoughtful replies - really appreciated!! Now only 4 sleeps and we will be there - will be quite an amazing experience I think as I havent been there for 30 years!!

Does anyone have a simple accommodation place they would recommend in the Kuta- Legian- Seminyak region that would capture the feel of Bali 30 years ago- ie near to wandering through the back villages and not so totally absorbed in the frenetic pace I understand now surrounds Kuta?

I appreciate your question, Ederlezi. I'm heading over in about 6 weeks w/my daughter and I was wondering the same thing. I noticed your country has much stronger warnings about Bali than the United States...that makes me wonder why they would differ so much.....maybe it's because Obama lived in Indonesia....

Travel warnings are a bit political and governments want to cover their backsides. On a list of secure nations Indonesia at 78 is well ahead of USA at 118 but of course Australia would not issue a travel warning against the States.
You just need to be sensible.

We have been coming for years and infact for the last few years spend six months a year here and we have a young daughter with us and we are not concerned about safety. I do agree with Muzza to avoid the larger younger bars and discos as they would if anything be a target more than the normal resturants and bars. I feel just as safe here as in London infact safer. Of course there are no guarantees but tourism is up significantly to pre bombing numbers so I think others agree it is safe here.

The warnings are the fair enough on the face of it.
I have been to Bali now ten times, once before the first bombing and nine times there after.
Always have a good time, just to be safe avoid younger generation night clubs, expecially if they are popular and in the touristy areas of Kuta, Legian & Seminyak. But frequenting smaller restaurants, smaller bars & night-clubs that are more exclusive to describe and with multiple layers of security to enter the premises; you should be fine.
Always book touristy things though the hotel at first until you are confident to deal with agents along the street; I would still rather do that through the hotel.
Trust me, the best tasting rice you will find through the street vendors at night; a dinner would set you back less than AUS$ 2.00 for two with native desserts.

Its been the same level warning since the bombing in 2002. I have been to Bali 9 times since then with my 2 children. All I can suggest is that you need to decide if you heed the warnings or look somewhere else to travel.

Me, I was there Nov 09 and going again in April with my wife and 2 kids..

Hi there - heading to Bali with my 2 daughters Thursday week - would be interested to hear peoples views on how seriously they take travel warnings from DFAT (ie reconsider need to travel) etc.......usually wouldn't think twice - but taking my children seems to change that!!
