Hi Kenneth,
Now, I am getting really worried. 75% of my banking in Indonesia is through BCA and it's a 100% for my wife.Be appreciated if you could re-iterate the scams again for the folks here.
Thanks again mate for the heads-up.

hi barrie, kenneth cole here, apparently what they are doing is when you leave the atm they have some device or card that they put into the machine that reads the most recent information, then pass on details and the fund are taken out in jakarta through atms in bank bni..

Cheers Kenneth. I'll use the in the banks at the major malls where there are security guards to keep an eye on things.

hi barrie, just stay clear of the atm machines at carrefour, they are under the escalators and out of sight from security, they have a camera but it only shoots from behind so they cant get a visual on faces..

a device known as a 'skimmer' is fitted over the card slot. it reads and transmits data to the crims. check out http://www.utexas.edu/police/alerts/atm_scam/ or google 'atm skimmer' for info.
atm's frequented mainly by tourists are the obvious target......more money in the a/c, higher credit limit.
the airport is also a target. i've friends stung here. the advantage for the crims is that you're 6, 10, 12 hours or more locked up in flight.
there's a simple test....b4 you insert your card, look carefully for an add on on the slot. any suspicion, don't use it.
on a similar note, don't hand over your card to pay for a bill. go with it.
if you are concerned or paranoid, don't use the atm. it might take a little longer, but hey, i'm on holidays. go to a bank to draw cash. you'll get a comparable rate to the atm, but have recourse if it's abused.
remember 'cash is king'. if you're coming for a short time.....say 2 weeks, bring cash (or travellers cheques) which you can lock in the hotel safe. comparing xchange rates, and atm fees you'll be miles ahead.
