Good one Hippiechick. I went to the last big cremation in Ubud and it was so packed with people I could hardly get a foto.

I have mixed feelings about such ceremonies. Cremation is one thing, but as you know there are dozens of other minor ceremonies held throughout the year in honour of one thing or another. It's not my religion or my business and certainly not my island, but I've seen smaller villages and households go badly in debt in order to put on a large enough show to satisfy everyone, corporeal or not. Not to mention huge groves of trees being cut down in order to build structures that are then used for one day and left to rot, or burnt to the ground.

ripeha please understand that this is not a western culture, so everything that happens in bali, has a purpose and a reason. they hold their dead in such honour and the belief that they will attain a greater peace, if more is done for them in the after life. Huge groves of trees are not cut down, they use bamboo which is a ever growing resource. I feel we as westerners have much to learn from their humility and love of family, families that we (in general) disgard into nursing homes when it becomes all too difficult.
