The last 3 trips I have declared 4.5 litres of booze (i.e 6 x 750 mlsbottles of wine) the average duty/tax I have paid is around $6 per bottle.
This is a small penalty to pay considering the exhorbitant cost of a bottle of wine in Bali plus it is the honest thing to do rather than hope that your excess will not be discovered.

How long did the process take?

Well done Eagle.I like that !! Last time I went in with 3 litres,I just put them on top of all my bags and waited for "the man" to grab me. Just as he did I looked him in the eye, put $AUD 20.00 into his hand, smiled and kept walking. That seems to work for me each time.Sometimes I just put out my hand to shake hands with the cash. They like that too. Got to be quick. No fumbling around.

I go to Bali 2-3 times per year and have taken 2-4 litres of wine each time. They have searched my bags a few times and I just play dumb. Out of frustration, they let me through. I did not know that the duties would be as low as $6 a bottle or I would have avoided the nervousness I have each time I go through. Is it an easy process Eagle? And how long did it take?

Being honest does not suit everyone but if you declare as Putri says it takes the nervousness away. Junglelulua has the knack but it can come unstuck because you have not declared that you have excess and that gives customs the upper hand if caught. My experience is the standard charge is Rp100,000 per litre which is around $8 a bottle but I have been successful in bargaining them down a bit. Also 1 litre is free. Also if you declare, showing that you are honest, the chances of them searching other bags, backpacks, or duty free carry on is reduced. The process is max 2 minutes. Just fill in the total litres on the back page (optional) of the dec. have your Rp or dollars ready and don't open your wallet showing all your holiday savings. Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice Eagle. I'll give it a go. I'm leaving on 4 May for another wonderful month in Bali. It will be good to have my own choice of wine. Cheers!

OK. here are a few more tips. I transport my wine in a double carton, the outside one clearly showing the contents e.g. 12 x 750 cls bottles wine. The carton I wrap in heavy clear plastic so it is still easy to see. then tape it and tie with twine. This is all done so they can easily figure out the contents and volume without opening the package or your case. next say 'can you help me it is for a special upacara.' Finally bargain; it is part of their culture.
