Just returned to Bali from Phuket on the new Air Asia schedule this morning. Was so surprised no customs declaration required, no inspections and as far as I could see everyone just walked. Comparing this to a flight from Aussie a couple of weeks ago when continual spot checks of luggage were done, random questions asked and the hunt for excess alcohol was on made we wonder if all arrivals are treated the same. Any comments?
DO BALI CUSTOMS TREAT AUSSIES DIFFERENTLY.

Hi Eagle,
Sure seems as though Aussies are being targeted at Customs! Maybe there is a rule change in the air but I haven't heard of anything.

oz tourism has increased 30+% year to year.
is the increased scrutiny in line with, or above this increase?
remember some of the biggest busts have been oz arseholes.
searches are linked to profiling.
if there is increased scrutiny it probably has a valid base. we are not, nor should we be, privy to the intelligence/reasons.
if you want to bitch, aim it at the low lives that caused the searches, not the poor bastards who search.
if you've nothing to hide, or done nothing wrong, what's the problem?
a few more minutes in an exhausting queue.......

Hi Shorty,
My point is not whether there should be security searches, questions etc it is why flights from Australia are treated differently to arrivals from other countries.
If the answer to this is yes they are, then why?
Possible answers could be customs can make good pocket money out of detecting excess alcohol
track record of Aussies bringin in narcotics
most flights ex Australia arrive during "normal" hours
I don't know but someone may have a take on this.Posted 11 months ago # -
hi eagle
we're the biggest tourist group. we have a drinking culture. a large proportion of our tourists are young/surf/kuta/legian habitues.
our national character tends to push the envelope as far as possible. it's only illegal if you're caught.
there is a tendency amongst our youngsters particularly, to be a little arrogant and dismissive of local customs and law.
combine this with our track record in the drug area. we are a profiling target.
re booze. we all know the limit - 2 litres. we all try to get around this with minimum cost/impact. (see your own post on 'declaring alcohol').
so customs make some pocket money.
we broke/ignored the law first.
for my generation, 'fair cop'. offering a bribe is equally as illegal as taking it.

Right on track Shorty. Note; some Filipino ladies are claiming customs are discriminating against them. I guess it all gets down to profile of origin..

Heres an idea.....how bout the two of you do all your travelling together, that way you can both discuss your "bitching" and help keep each other "right on track"...... then you can both sit down and tell us all about it eh?

col, reread my posts. i'm not 'bitching'.
i suggested that if you wanted to 'bitch' you directed it at those who cause the extra attention.
eagle and i agreed on something. so what?
slag me by all means, i don't give a rats, but to be pertinent join in/address the post.
the post is 'DO BALI CUSTOMS TREAT AUSSIES DIFFERENTLY.'
who knows? someone may agree with you.
