Hi everyone it's been a long time since i have been on the forum
and it's worry that brings me back !
I'm from perth originally and have traveled quiet a bit through
south east asia and have been living in china for the last two years
but i must say my memorys of bali are some of my best !
Now all i hear about Bali is how bad things have gotten there,
storys of rabies plague, dengy fever outbreaks, theft and robbery
not to mention the hoards of drunk yobbo's.
August 2008 was the last time i was there! has it really got that
bad ? or am i only getting the negative end of the stick ?
Barrie! Eagle! expats please tell me NO as iv'e been planning
some semi-retirement stays in that little piece of paradise !
Looking forward to your input ! Coolrunnings .
Is It That BAD ?

Rabies yes there is a huge amount of money been donated to combat this.
dengue - yes but it has always been a tropical climate problem hasnt it having said that ive had it twice in 12 years.
robberies yes there was a lot of nasty robberies, presumed to be a gang, not sure but this seems to be decreased. i have been robbed twice, once 6 years ago once this year. i do consider my self to be unlucky though in that respect. I would not say its that so bad here compared to other destinations .
Drunk yobbo's i have not seen them although im not a night life person. if they are around they are the same tourists that travel all over the world though i suspect.
so i still find Bali an acceptable place to live. i have lived in many places around the world , like yourself and frankly no where stays the same so its more a question of is it an acceptable to live rather than id it the same as it was. my opinion is yes its still a good place to be. my biggest moan is regarding the traffic but you have to have something to moan about dont you ? :)Posted 9 months ago # -
Hi Bradley. I haven't seen your name heading a post for ages. Since 2008 the 3 major general changes I have noted are
Traffic. Transport infrastructure has not kept pace with development plus locals have moved from piling on their bikes to driving SUVs etc. the result is a big squeeze on roads. You now need to seriously plan when and where you are going or have heaps of time.
Aussie yobs. With 12,000 Aussies arriving weekly the Australian contingent is more noticable compared with the total arrivals. Plus a portion of these are uncouth. Whilst this element was mainly confined to Kuta they have now spread out
from Seminyak to Sanur, Tegallalang to Tanah Lot and you name it. This tribe, who travel in large herds is quite influential in several aspects e.g. They are big time consumers of the amber liquid, all advertising it by wearing beer branded clothes, they have led to the sprouting of tattoo shops with little talent and their speech has even worn off on the local tukangs who now greet you with "owthefukaryah". It used to be selamat something or other.
Cost of living. Sure prices have escalated but with the strong Aussie dollar it's tolerable - unless you enjoy a glass or 2 of wine.Posted 9 months ago # -
I agree with fellow bloggers--the traffic is now horrible, especially in the southern tourist areas--a real disincentive to self-drive, normally my preferred mode of transport. It's not just locals in SUVs but heaps of Mainland Chinese tourists in big buses--you have to avoid their peak travel times--I've found that lunch time, when the touristos and truck drivers are taking a rest, is the best time to get around during the day--otherwise, after dark is good too but of course forget about any scenery. But once you get to your favorite quiet spot, it's still Bali. Book ahead if you are going anywhere on the usual tourist routes.

Thanks for the input Guys ! Yes i realise nothing stays the same but it is sad to see a beautiful culture Tainted by incomming C#%P from the western world !
They used to say the " ugly American " because they treated the rest of the world as Disneyland but now the ugly Aussie is taking over the title, in 2008 i was in Vietnam and started seeing the Aussie Yobbo bogan in the pubs and bars it was sickening !
And as for the traffic in bali well there is not a lot they can do and it sounds like it's already too late and as the locals become more affluent you can't denigh them their desire to own a car !
The speed of change iv'e seen here in China in the last two years is enough to make your hair grey , in a megametropolis like Beijing ( a city designed for bicycles ) there are 10.000 new cars on the roads everyday and a lease on a parking bay is higher than the price you paid for your apartment !go figure ?Posted 9 months ago # -
