Hi everyone,
We are new to Ubud and will be here for 2 years. I have a 5 yr old daughter that is being eaten alive by mosquitos (have been a mth now). We are using mossie coils at dusk, have used citronella based skin spray also but they haven't helped. She goes to school and gets bitten there as well. We have had a Dengue fever scare recently with her so we are hoping to at least reduce the bites.
Hoping not to have to use DEET based products as she has very sensitive skin. Does anyone have any advice for us, if so it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

I would check on the soap, shampoo, moisturiser you are using; mosquitos love fragrances. Better than citronella is thai lemongrass. You can grow it easily and just rub the stalk between your palms and dab the juice over your child's body. Most mozzie coils put the same DEET based insecticides in the air as sprays for both you & the mozzies to breathe. Ask in a local warung about obat nyamuk. They probably have local remedy better than a J&J product made under licence. To cheer you up those who get often bitten by mozzies seem less likey to get mozzie borne diseases. You would think the more you get bitten the higher the chance of getting dengue but some some reason it is not necessarily the case.

on the disease side....
if you're worried about malaria, take the pills.
dengue there's no prophylaxis.if she's getting an allergic reaction to the bites, use antihistamine cream or tabs. if you've a problem with this try local remedies...crushed fern leaf rubbed on the bite site can work.
the simplest is to cover up.
sorry eagle, you last sentence is..........if the beastie has just had a drink from an infected person, and prefers you for the next beer....

Thank-you Eagle some good suggestions we will try. Hi Shorty, not worried about malaria in Bali if we go to other islands we will take pills though. Thanks also for suggestions. Will give them a try too.

I also discovered a remedy in Qld on a fishing trip. Roll on the "roll on" deodorant, takes the sting out the the bite and stop you scratching. Another tip, there is a guy selling organic insect spray at Bali Bagus market on a saturday, I have found this helpful too

I tried the nyamuk plugged into the room electrical socket and no one was bitten last night...fingers crossed this will at least reduce the number of bites.
I'll try and get to the markets peggysue...is that the organic market in Ubud? An effective spray for daytime at school would be great.Posted 1 year ago # -

We have 8 year old twin girls - one of them got dengue fever 18 mths ago - she spent 5 days in BIMC hospital.Luckily for top medical help with communication lines open to Tropical Diseases medicos in Australia and local Dr's she pulled through. We now apply liberally Bushman Repellant from Australia - no bites! It does have DEET which many medicos rate as the most effective ingredient of available repellents.Best wishes.

Thanks kanajim. Nothing is working at this stage, trying all suggestions. Getting tired of seeing my daughter with bites everywhere and itching all the time! Bushmans repellent is looking like a possibility.

Mosquito net over the bed has worked wonders in the night....simple really.

Tiger Balm, available in all the apoteks, helps ease the sting/itching but won't keep the buggers away. Locally available "Soffell" spray repellent works for me (RP12,000 a bottle). I'm told that eventually, after numerous bites, one's body builds up a resistance to skeeters but not sure if that's true.

Hi, Try 30% detol antiseptic and 70% baby oil mixed. but do not use in the day time or your kids will "cook" in the sun.

or for daytime substitute baby oil with sunscreen

'..eye of newt, and toe of frog....'
as many have said, cover up where possible. how about looking from a different angle....why is she a mossie magnet? there's a lot of studies on what attracts the beasties. for starters http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/394824.
ironic, sweat, heat and dirty sox.....a kid/man thing?
why not check it out and see if there's some behavior/diet/wotever you can modify to reduce the attraction.

Make sure you are sleeping under nets ank keep them closed in the day. I use a natural repellant made here with a lot of citronella and lemon grass in it, have to reapply often though. I can send you some. Bali Buddha in Ubud has natural reppellant also.

mosquito protection for children
In the jungles of the Amazon - the local native guides told us to take extra B vitamins daily .... worked like a charm, until the day I left forgot in the morning & got eaten alive on the boatride back!Posted 1 year ago # -
Mosquito protection for children
I have heard that a good protection for children and adults alike is when having a bath, add dettol to the bath water, and also have a spray bottle made up of 1/2 dettol and 1/2 water Use it frequently, especially in the times of dengue mosquito activity. My family now use this when they go camping here in Oz as well.Posted 1 year ago #
