Way too soon to speculate whether or not he was murdered. Terrible situation for his family regardless of the circumstances. Poor people.
Statements from the local Indonesian police are as wise to follow as a drunk sailor on shore leave. It could be very feasible he may have sustained the injuries while surfing. But, it's too soon to know until a proper (if that's possible) investigation is performed by the local police.
I mean, how can they come to the conclusion so quickly that he was murdered? But the Dutch man who was found hung in a hotel room in Kuta with both his hands and feet duct tapped together, the police say may have been suicide. Huh?

don't be naive....police the world over only release info which helps the investigation. they also withhold pertinent info to entrap the nasties.
if tvnz or nz herald have relevant info, give it to the appropriate authorities. don't play the holier than thou, superior card.
it's amazing, a local dies or is killed, the media couldn't give a rats.

It was a NZ paper. Makes sense they report on a NZ citizen being found dead. If you want to read about local Indonesians dying please read the local papers, it is reported plenty!
