I am looking to rent a villa for 8 of us for 18 days at the beginning of next year and have been advised to approach villa owners privately, rather than through an agencies - does anyone know any owners of villas that I could contact? Your help is much appreciated.

I think given the number of "private villas" on Bali, booking through a reputable agency isn't such a bad idea. They can usually send you floor plans, photos, price plans, referrals, etc. and if they have a good business record (easy enough to check online) you may well get a better deal than through a private owner (who may or may not even exist--and be especially wary of requests for large advance deposits by wire transfer only), not to mention "I have a villa for rent" blog schemes.

Thanks Ripeha - good advice. I just thought some people may promote their villas through their own websites and not use an agency whom they have to pay commission. I have found some on the internet that do advertise just their own villas (all booked up unfortunately) but without specific names, it's tricky to search for them.

If you find a place via an agent, you can always then google it and try to contact the owner directly--a phone call may help too, when bargaining. I expect everyone knows this stuff goes on, so the prices will probably be pretty close--like booking hotels through asiatravel.com and similar sites.
