Ok all expats, I'm looking to do an extended stay in Bali, at
least 4 months. I have no idea how this is done. I've never
stayed outside the country for more than a 2 week vacation :(

my biggest concern is mainly, my safety- (single girl and no contacts
there...) also I really am looking more to learn the culture and
the people..I would enjoy a more slow pace place to be.

What parts of Bali do you think may accomodate this; both the safety
issue and the more slow pace lifestyle?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

My suggestion is East Bali: Amplapura/Karangasem/Klungung/Sidemen area, if you want a slow pace, safety and culture. Sidemen is a rice fields destination, below Gunung Agung...time passes by very slowly so bring a Kindle or a pack of paperbacks!

Dont worry. You will get in touch with the people, expats and locals, very fast and easy. Generally Bali is not more or less secure than Europe for example. For a cool and relaxed stay I suggest Sanur in the south or any other place in the southeast like Ripeha did. Sanur is not to busy not to quiet and you have all the needed infrastructures like supermarkets, bars, spa, beach and a lot of cheap and clean homestays. Avoid to stay in or around Kuta/Seminyak if you dont like to have 24/7 party, crowded streets and less security.

I'm always so confused when Americans refer to a date by the season. Have to think when is spring in northern hemisphere? Hmmm.
Another area of Bali that might suit you is around Candi Dasa and/or Lovina in the north. It is a slower pace, but has a good expat community, and a little bit of nightlife but not too much.
My advice is to get yourself to Bali and spend a month moving around checking it out and then decide where you want to go.

Hey Peggysue, the thought occurred to me, but then we would have had to read blog after blog after blog after blog about how this site should be managed, you know, can't do this, can't do that, what's wrong with it, you bad boy, etc....Sidemen is a fine place to stay, it doesn't really matter where....

Perhaps (i'm not too familiar with the island- buying maps as we speak :) ) i could stay in a central location and just take day trips outward?

I'm not much into partying... really just want to be able to expirience the food (i'm a foodie :P) and the culture; I think all of your suggestions are splendid.

    thank you so much

BTW Spring is usually March - end of May

Central and day trips is good (did I mention Sidemen ha ha)--Ubud is about as central as you can get, but can be pricey and has great food. Sanur would be about as far south as central goes, but is on the bypass which helps traffic-wise. Lonely Planet and Rough Guide have good Bali introductory info. The best maps come from Periplus--their Bali Street Atlas for all the details, and they also have good fold-out general maps. You can find them online or at their outlets in the tourist centers.

Peggysue, OK OK ha ha--I love Sidemen too and have always been careful not to push too hard! It is my favorite place on Bali and frankly the quieter it stays the better. Cheers, R.
